There are shoes that promise a lot and deliver just enough. And then there are shoes that make you feel something the moment you lace them up. The ASICS SUPERBLAST 3 sits firmly in that second category – and if you haven't been paying attention yet, now is genuinely the time to start.
The story of the SUPERBLAST 3 is told from the midsole outward, so let's get straight to it. For this one, ASICS has completely overhauled the foam setup here, and the results are honestly impressive. The new FF Leap cushioning –borrowed directly from ASICS' elite METASPEED racing line – sits at the heart of everything. It's their lightest and most responsive foam to date, a full 33% lighter and 13% more responsive than their standard FF Blast technology. That's not marketing fluff. You feel it immediately. There's a liveliness to each stride – like the shoe is genuinely trying to convince you that running is effortless. Spoiler: it nearly pulls it off.
What's clever, though, is that ASICS hasn't simply swapped one foam for another and called it a day. The FF Leap sits alongside FF Blast Plus in the midsole, and together they strike a balance between that cloud-like, protective cushioning you want on longer runs and the snappy, energised response that keeps things interesting when you fancy picking up the pace. High cushioning and genuine responsiveness in the same shoe can feel like a contradiction – the SUPERBLAST 3 makes it feel entirely natural.
Then there's the outsole, which is where things get a bit exciting. ASICS has engineered a trampoline pod shape into the sole – a design move that's as purposeful as it sounds. Positioned to amplify the toe-off phase of your stride, it creates an almost bouncy, propulsive sensation that adds a bit of theatre to every step. It's the kind of detail that makes you want to run just to feel it work. Pair that with an 8mm heel-to-toe drop and the transitions feel smooth and natural without ever feeling forced. Oh, and it weighs 239g. For a max-cushion shoe, that's a number that used to feel unthinkable.
The midsole might be where the magic happens, but ASICS has clearly thought carefully about everything above it too. The engineered woven upper is noticeably breathable – useful whether you're grinding through summer miles or squeezing in a run before the rest of the world wakes up on a damp February morning. The gusseted tongue wing fit system is one of those features that sounds overly technical but makes immediate sense on foot: the midfoot feels locked in, and that annoying habit tongues have of sliding off to one side is simply gone. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing that matters when you're several miles in and your focus should be on the run, not your kit. Reflective details round things off nicely for early-morning and evening runners – easy to overlook until you actually need them.
It's also worth mentioning that ASICS has made a genuinely considered move on the sustainability front. The sockliner is produced using a solution dyeing process that cuts water usage by around 33% and carbon emissions by roughly 45% compared to conventional methods. It won't change the way the shoe runs, but it's the kind of decision that's becoming increasingly important (and increasingly expected.)
So, who is the SUPERBLAST 3 actually for? Honestly, more people than you might expect. It's officially a fast shoe, but that description only tells half the story – it’ll eat up easy miles and long runs with genuine passion. That’s because the FF Leap foam and trampoline outsole mean it handles a change of pace far better than most shoes in its category. If the Gel-Cumulus 28 is the dependable, steady hand of the ASICS stable, the SUPERBLAST 3 is its more excitable sibling – the one that turns up full of energy and makes everything feel just a bit more fun. For runners who want serious cushioning without the weight, serious bounce without the fuss, and a shoe that genuinely rewards every single outing, this is it. Your easy runs are about to get a whole lot more interesting (and faster).
