GET TO KNOW THE ASICS GEL CUMULUS 28

If you’ve been in the running world for a while, you probably already know what the ASICS Gel-Cumulus line is all about – dependable, no-nonsense daily trainers that just go about their business mile after mile. The Cumulus 28 carries on that tradition, but with a few upgrades that genuinely make it feel like a step forward rather than just a fresh coat of paint.
Right out of the box, the upper feels like a nice quality bump from before. ASICS has reworked the engineered mesh so it feels softer and just a little more comfortable around the foot. It still hugs your midfoot securely without feeling tight, and there’s plenty of airflow to keep things cool when you’re out on longer runs. It’s not flashy, but it does feel like someone thought about comfort first.
Where this version really starts to feel different is underfoot. The old FF Blast Plus foam has been replaced with FF Blast Max, a lighter, more responsive material that gives each stride a bit more pep without turning the shoe into something overly aggressive. It still delivers the smooth, protective cushioning you want in a daily trainer, but with a liveliness that makes easy runs feel less like a slog and more like… running.
ASICS also keeps its PureGEL tech in the heel to help soften landings – especially useful on long, easy miles when your legs are starting to feel tired. Combined with the FLUIDRIDE outsole’s natural heel-to-toe roll, the ride feels balanced and predictable, which is exactly what you want from a neutral trainer. Durability hasn’t been ignored either. Hard-wearing AHAR LO rubber is tucked into high-impact areas on the heel to help the shoe last longer – good news if you’re planning to put in serious mileage week after week.
Specs haven’t wandered off into “maximalist” territory either. The Cumulus 28 sticks with an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, which hits that sweet spot for most runners who want comfort without feeling like they’re perched too high. And the weight is a bit lower than before – helping the shoe feel less cumbersome when you settle into your stride.
On the run, what you’ll notice is that familiar, reliable Cumulus character – but smoother and just a touch more fun. It’s still comfortable, forgiving and dependable, but there’s a spring to it that makes everyday runs feel better. If you’re upgrading from the Cumulus 27, you won’t feel lost; it’s the same comfortable ride, just with a few modern touches that improve it where it matters most.
In short: if you want a shoe that does what it’s meant to do – daily miles, easy runs, and steady training with no fuss – the Gel-Cumulus 28 delivers that classic feel with a bit more responsiveness and comfort than before.
