BEST RUNNING GEAR FOR WOMEN
Published: 22/12/2025 | By: Priya Gopaldas
For someone who’s spent hours on the trails, raced ultra distances, and battled weather most of us wouldn’t last ten minutes in, Dr. Priya Gopaldas knows exactly what makes good kit great. In this guide, the Sports Direct ambassador breaks it all down for women everywhere.
Finding the right running gear shouldn’t be complicated – the best gear is about comfort, function, and durability. I can’t count the number of times I’ve worn shoes that have made my feet hurt, “running” shirts that aren’t sweat-proof, and sports bras that are either too tight and cause chafing or simply not supportive enough. Whether you’re about to start a Couch to 5k journey or you’ve already clocked a few miles, choosing the right kit can make a huge difference.
In my opinion, good running gear should keep you comfortable through sweat, wind, and rain, reduce the risk of injury, and not lose its function after one use. Is that too much to ask for? If you’re a beginner, I’d recommend investing in the solid basics first – well-designed shoes, a supportive sports bra, tights that stay put, and weather-ready outerwear – rather than getting distracted by the flashy colours and quirky designs (and often expensive price tags) of gear that prioritises marketing over practicality.
My rule of thumb before buying new running gear is to think: Will this improve my running experience or just my appearance? If you’re able to answer “both” to that question, then you’ve found something special. Having spent 10+ years of my life as a keen runner (and owner of 30+ pairs of trainers!), here’s my guide to running gear that I can’t live without.
BEST WOMEN’S RUNNING SHOES
Choosing your perfect pair of running shoes is the single biggest upgrade you can make.
Understanding your foot type (high arches/flat feet/in between) is important because it affects how your foot absorbs impact when running. You should consider your pronation – how your foot moves with each step (ankles rolling inwards/outwards/neutral) – to determine the stability you need. Your landing style (heel, midfoot, or forefoot) also influences the cushioning and support that will feel best.
I’d highly suggest getting a gait analysis in-store – it simply means someone can look at how your foot lands to recommend a shoe that supports your stride. And don’t forget to think about your typical distance: long runs usually need more cushioning, while short, fast runs suit lighter, more responsive shoes.
Finally, know the terrain you’re running on – trail vs road. Trail shoes often have grippy outsoles, protective uppers, and added stability to handle uneven terrain, whilst road shoes tend to have smoother soles and plenty of cushioning to absorb repetitive impact.
BEST ALL-ROUND RUNNING SHOES FOR WOMEN
A game-changer. It’s hard to find a bad review about these shoes. The Lightstrike Pro midsole perfectly balances cushioning with spring, so they can handle all distances. The rocker geometry also means that whether you’re a heel, midfoot, or forefoot striker, these shoes can accommodate you. For a top-performance shoe, they’re also reasonably priced.
If you’re looking for comfort on long runs with enough responsiveness for tempo sessions, one of my top daily-training picks is the New Balance Rebel v5. When you put them on, one of the first things you notice is just how soft they feel. In lab testing, they measure 11.5 HA in midsole softness (which is super soft), but despite this they don’t compromise on shock absorption. I’ve noticed improvements from the previous v4 with extra support around the heel (I found the v4 heel too short, which caused rubbing).
I’ve used the Pegasus for years. I can confirm they are the most durable pair of running shoes I own. They’re a reliable choice for short, tempo, or long runs – I wear mine whenever I’m after steady, comfortable performance, and they work well for indoor treadmill sessions too. Running shoe choice is personal, but if you’re a heel striker in search of a versatile and affordable running shoe, it’s hard to go wrong with the Pegasus 41 (a model that’s existed since 1982, and for good reason!).
Other recommendations:
- Brooks Ghost 17 (highly recommended by a friend who started running earlier this year and wanted a dependable daily shoe without gimmicks).
- On Cloudsurfer 2 (my everyday work shoe; comfortable on 12-hour A&E shifts and durable – I’ve had the same pair for almost a year. Not the most responsive, but perfect for a few easy lunchtime miles).
BEST RUNNING SHOES FOR MARATHONS
When it comes to marathon shoes, you need the right balance of cushioning to absorb impact without compromising speed. During my marathon training block, I prioritise soft, cushioned shoes, but on race day I opt for carbon plates (stiff inserts that propel you forward). Some argue for training in your carbon plates too, but bear in mind that they aren’t very durable and lose responsiveness quickly.
I’ve worn Alphaflys in every road marathon I’ve completed. Every stride feels efficient, and you get into a rhythm listening to the “pop” of the plates pushing you forward. The Alphafly 3 brings serious upgrades – a widened carbon plate for stability, connected midsole foam for a smoother ride, and it’s the lightest Alphafly yet.
I bought these as a gift for my boyfriend – when he told me how much he loved running in them, I had to try them myself. What stood out was how bouncy they feel – the midsole blends soft cushioning with its carbon Energy Rods 2.0. The toe box isn’t as wide as the Alphaflys (or the Pro 3s) but the unmatched energy return makes this shoe a strong contender.
A pair I haven’t bought myself, but if you’re an ASICS fan, these are for you. They’re perfect for forefoot/midfoot strikers looking for a carbon-plated marathon shoe. They’re lighter than the Alphafly and Adizero models, but with a heel stack of 39 mm (Alphaflys 40 mm, Adizeros 39 mm), they feel similarly cushioned.
BEST BUDGET RUNNING SHOES
I bought a pair because I couldn’t believe Nike were selling running shoes at this price. They’re great for daily training runs and surprisingly durable.
Other recommended options:
- Adidas Questar 13 (excellent durability)
- ASICS Dynablast 5 (great shock absorption)
- Nike Interact Run (lightweight and breathable – ideal for training on holiday)
BEST SPORTS BRAS FOR RUNNING
A good sports bra isn’t just aesthetic – it’s essential. The right support dramatically reduces breast movement, making each stride more comfortable and helping prevent chafing, pain, and long-term strain on ligaments. Investing in a well-fitted, high-impact sports bra lets you focus on performance, not on adjusting your kit.
What to look for:
Choose breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics, soft seam-free designs, and adjustable features that let you fine-tune your fit – especially the underband, which provides most of the support.
If you have a bigger bust, moulded cups and a higher neckline can make a big difference. Once you know your size (don’t skip a fitting – many of us wear the wrong one!), aim for snug but comfortable: no gaping, no overspill, and enough security to jog on the spot without everything moving.
BEST FOR HIGH SUPPORT
Panache Sports Bra Known for their moulded cups and wide size range. You can adjust the straps to find your perfect fit. Some models have an underwire – it’s padded, but may not feel comfortable for everyone.
Champion Shock Absorber Sports Bra Has an infinity-8 support system to counteract the figure-of-8 bounce during running. Available in 44 chest/cup sizes with high adjustability – three positions for the chest strap and eight for the racerback. Despite lacking extra padding over the cups, many reviewers find it highly supportive.
Under Armour Women’s HeatGear High Sports Bra You instantly feel supported – a snug, secure fit that you almost forget you’re wearing. I love the front-adjustable straps, ideal for mid-run tweaks. The HeatGear material keeps you dry on sweaty runs.
BEST FOR MEDIUM SUPPORT
Adidas Run Pocket Medium-Support Bra I love that the pockets are big enough for keys, gels, and a phone. Great for summer running – if you’re wearing a T-shirt, you can take it off and loop it through the cords on the back without tying it around your waist.
BEST WOMEN’S RUNNING LEGGINGS
When choosing running leggings, comfort and practicality should come first. Look for sweat-wicking, breathable fabrics that keep moisture away. Seams should be smooth to avoid irritation – no one wants chafing mid-run. A stay-in-place design and high waist provide support and prevent slipping. Extra points for pockets – perfect for keys, a phone, or gels.
TOP-RATED PERFORMANCE LEGGINGS
Nike Swift Leggings
Nike Dri-Fit is always reliable for keeping cool. These leggings have three pockets (ideal!) and the material is light and silky but still supportive.
BEST BUDGET LEGGINGS
I was gifted these, and they genuinely surpassed expectations – especially for the price. They’re my winter-run go-to thanks to the high waist, durable fabric that keeps its stretch wash after wash, and practical pockets.
Perfect for beginners who don’t want to splurge. They have an adjustable waistband and breathable fabric. They don’t feel as “premium” as high-end options, but for the price, they’re a smart, no-fuss choice.
BEST ACCESSORIES FOR WOMEN RUNNERS
Running Socks
Never underestimate good running socks – they can completely transform comfort. I always choose anti-blister, breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics. My go-to are the ASICS Performance Run Crew Socks – durable, with mesh ventilation and toe cushioning (great if you’re like me and always seem to damage toenails).
Hydration Vests and Belts
For long distances or trails, a good hydration setup is life-changing. I’m obsessed with my Salomon Active Skin 4L Vest – it fits like a hug, never bounces, and holds everything. For shorter runs, I rotate between the Salomon Pulse Belt (the only belt that genuinely stays put) and FreeTrain vests, which keep your phone front-and-centre.
Whatever you choose, look for adjustable straps, secure pockets, and a design that lets you fuel without breaking rhythm.
RUNNING EXTRAS
A good pair of earphones is essential. I use Jaybird for their secure fit (AirPods always fall out of my ears), reasonable price, and noise-cancelling feature for gym sessions. Shokz are brilliant for outdoor running when you want to stay aware of your surroundings.
Since it’s winter, I also recommend lightweight gloves – Nike Running Pacer Gloves fit beautifully and keep fingers warm without feeling sweaty.
BOTTOM LINE
With so many options out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed – but remember: the best running gear is simply the gear that helps you feel comfortable. What works for one runner might not work for another, so prioritise fit and function first – the rest will fall into place as you find your own running style.
