The sun’s shining, the temperature’s soaring (if you’re in the UK, this is a ‘maybe’) and you want to get out and about with friends and family. There’s no better way to spend summer than learning a new sport: pickleball.

For those who don’t know, pickleball uses small paddles and a plastic ball covered in holes, played in either twos or fours.

If it’s something you’ve considered giving a go before, or you’re searching for a new summer hobby, then this could be the answer. But, you need the right kit. From clothing to equipment, like with any sport, having the essentials can help you get the most out of the sport or activity you’re doing, as well as keeping you prepared and safe.

This short guide will run through some of the products you should consider before you set your sights on becoming local pickleball champion. So what are you waiting for? Grab the essentials and start playing!

Equipment

If you’re playing pickleball for the first time, you probably won’t need a lot of equipment. It can be as simple as a paddle, ball and the location of where you’re going to play, but let’s dive into the basics.

Paddles

There’s a wide variety of paddles on the market, so finding the right one for you can be a bit of trial and error. We offer a variety of different paddles at Sports Direct, with a range of sizes and materials available. Some things to consider when buying your pickleball paddle are:

  • Size and weight - the size and weight of your paddle can affect your gameplay, from lightweight picks to heavier options, aiding in the overall feel, power and swing
  • Material - you can find a range of materials used to make a pickleball paddle, from fibre glass to wood to graphite and more
  • Grip size - the paddle needs to be comfortable in your hand when playing, so you're able to hit the shots you need to win. There are different grip sizes available, so you may need to experiment to find the right one for you

There's a range of paddles at Sports Direct, featuring different materials and sizes.

A ball

Another integral piece of kit for your session is the ball itself. Recognised by its holes, a pickleball ball should be an essential in your kit bag - don’t forget the spares, too!

Bag

You need something to carry your pickleball kit in. You ideally want a bag that’ll hold everything easily and provide support and durability while in use. It’s a personal preference on what bag you choose, but there’s an array of different duffles and holdalls you can choose from, all perfect for protecting your essentials before and after a game.

Don’t forget the little important things!

Remember to take any other essentials you may need or want, such as:

  • Water or another drink - hydration is key (and if you need a water bottle, we have you covered in that area, too)
  • A snack
  • Spare equipment, like extra balls or paddles

Clothing

Your outfit can make or break a day spent on the court - you want to be comfortable and able to move freely.

Like with other sports, your clothes should be lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking. Especially if it’s hot outside.

Here’s a few things you could consider taking when thinking of what to wear for pickleball:

  • A lightweight top, t-shirt or vest - think: stretchy materials, sweat-wicking fabrics and mobility
  • Shorts - if it’s warm outside, a pair of light shorts are a good option
  • Leggings - flexible fabrics and breathable materials, leggings are a great pick if you want to cover up
  • An extra layer, such as a hoodie or sports jacket - if it gets too warm you can always remove it!
  • Moisture wicking socks
  • A cap or hat to protect your head and face from the sun…or to complete your outfit with stylish flair (we approve of both reasons!)

In terms of footwear, court shoes can be a good option, providing lightweight materials yet strong, durable comfort. Pickleball shoes are also, of course, a great choice, especially if you plan on playing regularly

You may want to wear a sports bra if you’d like extra support while playing

It can prove to be trial and error when searching for the right clothing and footwear but you’ll soon find your favourite pickleball clothing rotation.

The important thing to remember is that your comfort is key. Although different sports, you could choose to wear your favourite tennis gear to a pickleball game, as it’ll have most of the qualities you’re after.

Whether you’re a pickleball pro or a beginner looking for a new sport, staying prepared is key, so find your pickleball essentials at Sports Direct.
