Reformer Pilates might look complicated for the uninitiated, but once you give it a go you’ll realise it’s all about movement. With plenty of stretching and strength work involved, what you wear can make a big difference to how comfortable you feel throughout the class. If you're heading to your first session, here are some of the items that’ll keep you stylish and comfortable from the warmup to the final stretch.
You need the right clothes to move comfortably and confidently, but the good news is you don’t need to rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe. High-waisted leggings, a fitted or lightweight T-shirt and a pair of grippy socks might be the go-to Reformer Pilates look, but there’s a reason for it. Here’s our top picks to help you feel ready for your first class before you even step into the studio.
Your priority needs to be freedom of movement. You’re going to be stretching in news ways and changing position, so loose clothing can quickly get in the way.
A fitted T-shirt, vest or long-sleeve top gives you plenty of room to move without your top catching on the reformer. Look for lightweight, stretchy materials that move with you rather than against you. Something like adidas’ Long Sleeve Performance Gym Top is ideal for supporting you in the right areas without being restricting. High-waisted leggings or fitted shorts are a good choice for the same reason, giving you a comfortable fit while keeping everything in place.
It’s also worth avoiding anything with bulky zips, buttons or hardware that could become uncomfortable when you're lying or sitting on the reformer. The last thing you want is something digging into you, taking you out of the moment.
Reformer Pilates might be low-impact, but don't underestimate the intensity of the workout. Once you start moving you'll need clothing that can handle the heat, because it’ll be hard work.
Breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics can help keep you feeling fresh throughout the session, particularly if you're working through a more intense class. You’ll want something like these Everlast Performance Gym Shorts, designed with quick-dry technology to support you as you sweat.
Lightweight materials are a good option for the same reason, while stretchy fabrics give you the flexibility needed for everything from lunges to planks. Oh, and you’ll be looking for something seamless, both to avoid any distractions.
The aim is simple: clothing that you barely notice when you're concentrating on the movement.
If there's one thing you shouldn't turn up without, it's a pair of grip socks. A lot of studios require them for hygiene and safety, while the grippy soles help give you more traction during different movements.
Unlike standard socks, grip socks are designed to help your feet stay planted as you move through exercises. That extra bit of grip can make a difference when you're pushing, pulling and holding positions you’ve never held before.
Reformer Pilates isn't the time for a pocket full of essentials. You'll be moving between different positions throughout the class, so keeping things simple is always the way to go.
Leave bulky jewellery at home and avoid anything that could dig in or distract you from the session. If you need your hair tied back, a bobble or soft headband will be perfect for keeping it away from your face.
A nice water bottle is also worth bringing along. As we said earlier it can be a tough workout, so staying hydrated is a must. A nice bottle will be especially important if you're heading straight from the studio into the rest of your day, where you’ll need to restore whatever fluids you lose.
The perfect outfit doesn't need to be complicated. Consider something fitted, flexible and breathable, with grip socks to keep you grounded. Once you've got those basics covered, you can focus less on what you're wearing and more on getting to grips with the reformer.
Whether you're trying reform pilates for the first time or committing to make it part of your weekly routine, wear something that lets you move freely, stay comfortable and feel ready for the session ahead.
