There are matchdays, and then there are European nights at Anfield. You know the ones. Floodlights bouncing off a heaving Kop, the away end going quiet by the tenth minute, that low hum around the ground somehow getting louder without anyone actually singing louder. Liverpool and adidas have bottled that feeling for 26/27, and the result is the club's new third kit: black, maroon and silver, with a little bit of Anfield after dark stitched into every thread.
Let's get into the design, because there's plenty going on here. The shirt lands in a deep, almost midnight black, with rich maroon detailing and matte silver accents. It's moody without disappearing into the background, which is pretty much the brief for a European third kit. More importantly, it feels like Liverpool rather than simply another black shirt with a badge slapped on it.
Look closer and you'll find an engineered print running across the body. Subtle at first glance, but built to echo the movement, noise and collective energy of the Kop on a big European night. Sounds a touch romantic on paper, admittedly. But if you've ever been stood in that end under the lights, you'll know exactly what they're getting at.
Then there's the hardware. The Liverpool crest, Trefoil and sponsor branding all arrive in metallic silver, catching the light against the black base and giving the whole thing a properly premium finish. Classic three stripes run across the shoulders, keeping the silhouette rooted in adidas heritage while the overall look stays firmly 2026/27.
The shorts and socks follow the same black-and-silver recipe, making this a full kit rather than a shirt doing all the heavy lifting. No complaints there.
Underneath the nostalgia, there's serious performance tech too. adidas has fitted the shirt with its latest CLIMACOOL+ system, combining lightweight engineered fabrics with strategically placed ventilation to keep players cool when the game starts getting spicy in the final 20. Function meets theatre. As it should.
And the story doesn't stop at the pitch. adidas Originals has built out a full Teamgeist 26 collection around the release, bringing the same aesthetic into streetwear with jackets, track pants, tees and Climacool footwear. In other words, you don't have to wait for Champions League night to get involved.
The launch campaign, "Feel The Anfield Effect", doubles down on the mythology. Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch, Rio Ngumoha, Ceri Holland and Grace Fisk front the campaign, with narration from Owen Cooper, the actor whose own Anfield connection gives the whole thing a little extra weight. It's less conventional product launch, more love letter to those nights when the stadium feels like it's got a life of its own.
And that's what makes this kit work. Liverpool aren't just throwing black, maroon and silver at a third strip and calling it a day. They're tapping into one of the club's biggest cultural currencies: European nights at Anfield, the noise, the nerves, the sense that something might happen before anything has actually happened.
Black. Maroon. Silver. A bit of Trefoil nostalgia. A lot of Anfield mythology. The 26/27 Liverpool third kit is out now.
