Kids’ school shoes should feel secure at the heel, comfortable across the widest part of the foot and roomy enough for their toes to move. Leave around a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Try both shoes with their usual school socks and check for slipping, pinching or rubbing. If one foot is larger, fit the shoes to that foot. Pressure at the sides may mean they need a wider fit rather than a bigger size.

Many UK schools ask for plain black shoes with little or no visible branding, but uniform rules vary. Check the school’s policy before buying. An all-black upper and sole with a simple shape will suit most dress codes. If the school allows trainers, choose a plain black pair. Otherwise, stick with traditional school shoes.

The right fastening depends on the child’s age and what they can manage on their own. Touch-fastening straps are quick and easy for younger children. Laces give a more adjustable fit once they can tie them confidently. Buckles hold the foot securely, while slip-on shoes need to fit closely at the heel so they don’t move around. Match the fastening to the child, not just the look.

Buy school shoes close enough to the start of term that the fit is still right, but leave enough time to exchange them if needed. Popular sizes can sell out during the back-to-school rush, so don’t leave it until the final day. The shoes should feel comfortable straight away and shouldn’t need a long breaking-in period.

Look for hard-wearing uppers, strong stitching and a sturdy sole with good grip. Reinforced toes and heels can help protect the areas that take the most wear. Scuff-resistant finishes also make shoes easier to keep looking tidy. Clean them regularly and let wet shoes dry naturally, away from radiators and direct heat.
